Judge: Ronald Bayens
Ronald Bayens, renowned portrait and landscape painter, resides in Bristol, TN, and maintains studios in VA and in Auburn, AL, where he pursued his prolific painting career over the last 30 years since moving to the U.S. from Canada. It’s easy to see why Ron is admired and beloved as a painter and instructor. Ron explained each of his selections for the awards with clarity and enthusiasm. His selections had nothing to do with subject matter, but everything to do with the composition, shapes, limited values, and abstract elements that, together, comprise a painting. As a teacher and an artist, his approach to judging was both academic and emotionally responsive. Artists and non-artists alike were held captive by his articulate, often poetic, explanations of what “works” in each awarded piece. Afterward, Ron made himself available for questions and critiques. I think I speak for everyone, when I say we left the evening feeling educated and inspired.
Congratulations to all artists in the show and to our award winners this year! And very special thanks to all who attended the opening reception, in support of one another, of our wonderful art association, and of the art of plein air painting!
The show will be on exhibit at Aldridge Gardens through the end of September. I do hope you’ll have a chance to see the works in person. If not, you can view all of them on the APAA website, thanks to our webmaster Toska Courbron!
