A paint out is a 1 to 2-day plein air painting excursion at a location determined by the hosting APAA member. These events usually take place on a Friday and Saturday. Non-members may come as one-time guests of a member, with approval of the host.
Paint-outs are planned at the end of each year (November 1 – December 15) by members. Date(s) are reserved, on a first-come, first-served basis, by December 15. Paint-outs are usually scheduled for the second or third weekend of the month.
A Pop-up Paint-out is a one-day plein air painting opportunity at a location determined by the hosting member. A Pop-up may be held during the week and is often a spur of the moment occurrence. Members will often receive notification of pop-up paint-outs through email, but can be through social media only. These may or may not be placed on the annual APAA calendar due to short notice.
WEATHER DECISIONS AND APAA
PAINT-OUTS
Historically, outdoor paint-outs are still on, if there is isolated or scattered rain with a 40% or lower chance.
The HOST will watch the radar closely and make the call to cancel. Hosts need to have a weather app on their phone and have a signup sheet, requiring cell phone numbers.
Members must check in with host and provide cell phone number.
WHEN, and HOW WILL IT BE CALLED OFF by the Host.
· WHEN: 48 hours in advance if weather forecast indicates more than 40% chance of rain or severe weather with thunderstorms, or below freezing temperatures.
· HOW: Text message or email. Most likely email if two days before event starts, or text if sudden warning on weather app or if subsequent days are cancelled.
· WHO notified: Those members that signed up via email when the Call for Artists went out and provided their cell phone number at check in.
· Members must use their own discretion to attend or not to travel. If you decide not to come please send the host a courtesy text or email.
WAYS TO PAINT when weather isn’t ideal.
Outdoor painting (Plein Air) is not often ideal. We may have misty rain, fog or cold. Sometimes it requires a brief shelter until an isolated shower goes by. This is an opportunity for a little comradery! There are usually some porches, awnings, or overhangs nearby, or your umbrella. Some paint out of the back of their car with the hatch up or inside their car.
TIPS
· Hava a poncho for yourself in your bag. Pack a large leaf bag to cover easel.
· Check weather and wear layers if cold. Gloves with fingers cut off and wool socks help.
· Anchor your easel with a bag and heavy items
· Rain doesn’t hurt Oil or Acrylic paintings.
· Watercolor and gouache artists should be aware of radar and pack up before rain sets in.
APAA Member Paint-Out Exhibit Information
Several paint-out venues allow members to exhibit their wet paintings on the last day for a limited amount of time.
Rules for the exhibit will be included in the Call for Artists email. Members must be compliant with these rules and any additional directions from the venue sponsors. Please be considerate of people putting up and maintaining the exhibit. They are donating their time and often have other work duties. Once your paintings are hung, they should stay in place until the designated end of the exhibit.
You will need to bring supplies to frame your own paintings. (Frames, wires, etc.)
We are privileged to have them welcome and promote our painters and APAA through the exhibits. They do this at their discretion and spend their valuable time setting up and assisting us. This said, we as a group need to be courteous, and compliant with any requests.
Below are current venues that allow exhibits
· Hamilton City Hall after the paint out and a Christmas show
· Heritage Days in Trussville
· Pike Road – after paint out and other opportunities announced
· Wetumpka The Kelly Gallery
